S = Scripture: Luke 18:31-34 (GOD’S WORD Translation)
31Jesus took the twelve apostles aside and said to them, “We’re going to Jerusalem. Everything that the prophets wrote about the Son of Man will come true. 32He will be handed over to foreigners. They will make fun of him, insult him, spit on him, 33whip him, and kill him. But on the third day he will come back to life.” 34But they didn’t understand any of this. What he said was a mystery to them, and they didn’t know what he meant.
E = Explanation:
Jesus is explaining to his closest followers what is about to happen. He is telling them basically: It’s time for us to go. I can’t be late to be captured by non-Jewish people who will (along with our own people) insult me, spit on me and kill me. I am going voluntarily because it is what is supposed to happen, but don’t worry, three days later I will come back from death and all of this beating and spittong on stuff just fine.
All of this sounded far fetched and made no sense to the Apostles as they thought of Jesus as a great deliverer and had seen the great miracles he was capable of with their own eyes. Turning yourself over to be tortured, embarrased and killed doesn’t seem like the best way to deliver an entire people group.
A = Application:
I need to understand that sometimes The way God does things may look like it makes no sense, but he may have a deeper plan that I do not understand. I need to trust Him and go along with anything that He clearly has directed or desires for me to do.
